Solar Yoga Center has held hatha yoga classes continuously since 1969.  SYC was the first yoga studio in St. Louis, Missouri, and was originally named Yoga Center of St. Louis.

From the beginning, the teachers agreed on the good karma practice to not be paid for teaching at Solar Yoga.  The charge to students for classes was kept at a minimum – enough to pay for utilities and basic building upkeep.

This tradition continues today.

Over the last 49 years some of our practices changed. Classes were shortened from 2 hours to 90 minutes.  We no longer take cold showers before the calming asanas and Guided Meditation.  The classic Solar teaching practice – including beginning every class with psycho-physicals – has expanded to a number of diverse practices today.

Specifics on our teaching styles are in the teacher bios and class descriptions.

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a martial art created by African Slaves in Brazil as a means to protect themselves from their oppressors over 400 years ago. A dynamic physical art form with roots in the ceremonial dances of the Bantu and Native Indian people of Brazil, it weaves together elements of music, vigorous body movement, acrobatics and self-defense. Capoeira creates a strong sense of community and develops self discipline and self confidence.

The shared intention of sitting together in meditation creates a sacred space. Our format includes some instruction, silent meditation, dharma talk and open discussion. Sometimes we schedule potluck lunches following meditation. This group is led by several rotating facilitators listed below. If you are looking for a support and connection try our established group at Solar Yoga Center.    Our group has no required fee, but voluntary donations are accepted.  One recipient of our donations is the Mitrata Nepal Foundation for Children, a 501C3 non-profit working in Nepal.
